The Consell de Govern has approved an investment of €17,776,668.90 for the construction of the new Faculty of Science at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). This project aims to address the current lack of space in the existing building and provide modern, sustainable facilities that will strengthen both teaching and research.
The new faculty will make it possible to host new degree programs, such as Marine Sciences, scheduled to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year, while also improving conditions for established degrees like Physics and Chemistry, which are currently limited by outdated infrastructure.

Authorised investment of €17.7 million for the construction of the new Faculty of Science at the UIB
Beyond solving space constraints, the initiative seeks to enhance the academic and scientific quality of the UIB, reinforcing the commitment of both the university and the Government of the Balearic Islands to academic excellence.
The project also represents a commitment to innovative architecture, energy efficiency, and sustainability, applying principles of economic rationality. Since it was first proposed in 2022, the estimated cost has risen from €13.38 million to the current €17.77 million due to rising construction prices. Funding will be provided through €13.38 million from the Sustainable Tourism Fund and €4.39 million via the Insularity Compensation Fund.
The investment will be distributed over three years:
- 2025: €5,177,108.22
- 2026: €7,506,106.48
- 2027: €5,093,454.20
This project is part of the LIET program, which promotes research, innovation, and job creation, particularly during the low tourist season. With this initiative, the Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to developing the university system and improving educational infrastructure across the territory.
