Average retirement pension exceeds €1,500 in August, up 4.4% in one year

Spain’s Social Security system paid out over 10.3 million contributory pensions to nearly 9.4 million beneficiaries in August. The total monthly bill for these benefits reached €13.62 billion, according to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

The average pension across the system now stands at €1,312.9 per month, 4.5% higher than in August 2024. Within this figure, the average retirement pension, received by about 6.5 million people, amounts to €1,507.55 per month, representing a 4.4% annual increase. Men account for 59.2% of retirement pensioners.

By pension scheme, the average retirement pension reaches €1,666.6 under the General Scheme, €1,010.3 for the Self-Employed, €2,907 in the Coal Mining sector, and €1,669.7 in the Seafarers’ Scheme. The average widowhood pension stands at €935.8, being the main income for 1.5 million people, 95.7% of whom are women.

The average amount for new retirement pensions registered up to July is €1,613.3, rising to €1,722.5 under the General Scheme.

Almost three-quarters of pension spending is allocated to retirement benefits (€9.96 billion), followed by widowhood pensions (€2.2 billion), permanent disability (€1.25 billion), orphanhood (€178.8 million), and family support benefits (€36.5 million).

Retirement age continues to rise

Incentives introduced since 2022 are encouraging workers to delay retirement. In 2025, the average retirement age has risen to 65.3 years, compared with 64.4 years in 2019. For women, the average is slightly higher at 65.8 years.
Currently, 72.4% of new retirements occur at or after the statutory retirement age, up from 60% in 2019. Early retirements, meanwhile, have fallen by 12.4% in six years, now accounting for less than one-third of the total.

Gender gap supplement

In August, more than 1.1 million pensions included the gender gap supplement, with an average monthly amount of €75.2. Women make up 86.2% of recipients. Nearly half of those benefiting (47.8%) receive it for having two children, followed by one child (24.8%), three children (18.2%) and four children (9.3%).

Civil Service pensions (Clases Pasivas)

In July (latest available data), the Civil Service pension bill amounted to €1.67 billion, a 6.1% increase compared with July 2024. This scheme mainly covers military personnel, civil servants of the General State Administration, the judiciary, Parliament, and other constitutional bodies.
