Hospital Mateu Orfila, in Menorca, has reinforced its Gastroenterology Service with the incorporation of Dr. Willy Sánchez Fernández, who fills one of the two highly difficult-to-cover vacancies declared by the Government of the Balearic Islands.

Dr. Sánchez, a graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, recently completed his residency in gastroenterology at Son Espases University Hospital, where he also obtained a master’s degree in Digestive Pathology. His training included rotations at leading centres such as Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and Fundación Jiménez Díaz in Madrid. He also received the 2025 Son Espases Research Award for a project aimed at eradicating the hepatitis C virus.

With his addition, the team now consists of three specialists: Dr. Joan Gelabert Zornoza, head of the Service, Dr. Juan Clotet Hernández, and Dr. Willy Sánchez himself. This expansion from two to three physicians will allow the hospital to improve patient care and reduce waiting times for Menorca residents.

The Health Area Manager of Menorca, Bernardo Pax, and the hospital’s Medical Director, Eva Egea, welcomed the new gastroenterologist, emphasising that his arrival is part of the recruitment strategy promoted under Decree Law 5/2023, which addresses the coverage of hard-to-fill medical positions.

So far in 2025, the Gastroenterology Service at Hospital Mateu Orfila has managed 4,503 consultations, including 1,124 first visits (a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2024) and 3,379 follow-up consultations. The unit has also performed 1,835 diagnostic procedures, among them 805 colonoscopies and 676 gastroscopies.

Pax highlighted that the incorporation of Dr. Sánchez is “a very positive step for both patients and professionals of a service that has long suffered from a shortage of specialists.” He added that efforts will continue to complete the staff and strengthen other medical departments.

In addition, six new doctors have been hired this year across specialities such as Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Pharmacy, alongside eight more physicians in primary care and emergency services. New consultations in Allergology and Pediatric Neurology, as well as the creation of a Coloproctology Unit, have also been introduced, preventing patients from having to travel to the reference hospital in Mallorca for specialized care or diagnostic tests.

With these additions, Hospital Mateu Orfila reaffirms its commitment to providing specialised healthcare services closer to Menorca’s patients, ensuring more comprehensive and accessible medical care on the island.
