The Balearic Islands ended August with water reserves at 41%, two points below July’s figure and also below the level recorded a year ago. The combination of scarce rainfall and high temperatures has worsened drought conditions in several areas of the archipelago.

Declines by island

By island, Mallorca dropped from 46% to 43%, Menorca from 40% to 34%, and Ibiza from 29% to 27%. Only Formentera remained stable, although at low levels.

Regarding the demand units (UD), nine registered decreases: Menorca, Artà, Manacor-Felanitx, Es Pla, Palma-Alcúdia, North Tramuntana, South Tramuntana, Ibiza, and Formentera. Only Migjorn showed a slight improvement. The sharpest declines were observed in North Tramuntana, South Tramuntana, and Artà.

Water reserves drop to 41% in August as drought alert spreads across the Balearic Islands

Pre-alert and alert zones

With these results, Artà and Ibiza officially enter the alert scenario, joining Es Pla, which was already in that category. The overall situation is as follows:

  • 1.6% of the territory (UD Formentera) remains in normality.
  • 70.7% in pre-alert (Menorca, Manacor-Felanitx, Migjorn, Palma-Alcúdia, North and South Tramuntana).
  • 27.7% in alert (Es Pla, Artà, and Ibiza).

The global index of the Hydrological Demarcation stands at 0.330, lower than last year (0.364) and two years ago (0.419).

Less rain and hotter weather

According to AEMET, August was considered slightly dry in the Balearic Islands, with an average rainfall of 13.5 l/m², compared to the usual 20.1 l/m².

  • Mallorca: 13.1 l/m² (vs 21.1), slightly dry.
  • Menorca: 28.3 l/m² (vs 16.9), wet.
  • Ibiza: 1.1 l/m² (vs 18.5), dry.
  • Formentera: 1.6 l/m² (vs 13.4), dry.

So far this hydrological year, rainfall stands at 93% of the average, with Mallorca at 95%, Menorca at 89%, and the Pityusic Islands at 85%.

Temperatures were very warm across all islands, with an average of 26.5 ºC, representing an anomaly of +1.2 ºC compared to the long-term average.

Outlook

For September, experts do not expect significant changes: water reserves are likely to remain stable, without major increases or decreases, though drought alerts are spreading to larger parts of the territory.
