Through courses organised by the Government, key operators have been able to resolve their questions regarding labelling conditions and the use of the new logo.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, through the Directorate General of Agri-Food Quality and Local Product, has organised information sessions in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza to clarify doubts surrounding the use of the Local Product logo presented by the Government in July.
According to Minister Joan Simonet, the main objective of this logo “is to provide Balearic agri-food products with a corporate identity that makes them easier to distinguish from others. It is an initiative that responds to a long-standing demand from the primary sector, which has called for a clear identification of local products to highlight and differentiate them.”
Between September 9 and 11, the Government held training courses where agricultural, fishing and forestry producers, along with operators from the agri-food industry, food distribution and retail sectors, were able to address their questions about incorporating the logo into their labelling. In total, nearly one hundred people attended the sessions held across the three islands.

Nearly one hundred producers from the Balearic Islands take part in training sessions on how to implement the Local Product logo
“These sessions are part of the Local Product Promotion Plan. We continue to move forward and fulfil the established program, always in agreement with the sector. First, we defined by law what constitutes a local product; then we created a brand and its identity. Now it is time to start using it,” explained Joan Llabrés, Director General of Agri-Food Quality and Local Product. He praised the “very positive” reception of the initiative among producers, noting that “they are proactive and determined to apply the logo to their product labels.”
The user manual for the Local Product logo is already available on the dedicated microsite www.caib.es/sites/promocio_alimentaria. The guide establishes two types of logos:
- A generic version, to identify any local product.
- A specific version, which highlights the use of local varieties and products that are 100% of local origin.
What is considered a local product?
The Government legally defined “local product” last year. This designation applies to:
- Agricultural products are grown in the Balearic Islands.
- Livestock products are produced in the archipelago.
- Fish, shellfish and aquaculture products from Balearic waters.
- Other unprocessed foods are produced in the islands.
- Foods produced and marketed under a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), or other geographical indications from the Balearic Islands.
- Processed foods made in the islands with a primary ingredient sourced locally.
- Forest products, whether timber or non-timber, are obtained from Balearic forests.
- Non-food products that meet any of the above conditions.
