The Consell de Mallorca has presented the island’s highest distinctions to 25 individuals and organisations recognised for their outstanding contribution to society.

The president of the institution, Llorenç Galmés, presided over the 2025 Honours and Distinctions Awards, describing the recipients as “tireless pioneers who have opened new paths and left a living legacy. Their solidarity, innovation and vision have carried Mallorca’s name far beyond its shores.”

Nearly 1,000 people attended the ceremony, where the Medals of Honour and Gratitude of Mallorca were awarded to: Joan Carulla, the Little Sisters of the Poor, Garden Hotels, the Balearic Islands Railway Friends Association (AAFIB), the Dones marjaleres de sa Pobla, Francesc Pomar, Toni Frontera, Joan Company Florit, Pau Cladera Marroig, Licors Moyà, Cafés Bay, Francesc Antich, and Jeroni Albertí i Picornell.

In addition, Luis Maraver was named Adopted Son of Mallorca, while Joan Llull and Lluís Alemany Pujol received the title of Illustrious Sons of the Island.

The Jaume II Awards, which recognise individuals and organisations that in the past year have excelled in promoting the symbols, heritage and identity of Mallorca, went to: Forn des Pla de na Tesa, the Esport per a la igualtat Association, the Jardines de Alfàbia, the Mountain Rescue Group of the Consell de Mallorca, Álex Sánchez Palomero, the Siloé Association, Embat Llibres, the Friends of San Carlos Castle Association, and Madò Pereta.

During his speech, Galmés praised the passion and dedication of the awardees: “The overflowing passion they bring to everything they do is the same passion with which Miquel Costa i Llobera wrote El Pi de Formentor after sailing and drawing inspiration from the beauty of Formentor’s landscape.”

A Message of Strength and Commitment

The president drew a parallel between Costa i Llobera’s poem and the Mallorcan character: “El Pi de Formentor symbolises the tree of struggle, growing and thriving despite the hostility of the elements, just like our people, who face challenges and build the future with effort and passion.”

He also addressed today’s pressing challenges for Mallorca: the migration crisis, demographic pressure and resource saturation, all of which —he stressed— require urgent and courageous policies, such as regulating vehicle access and modernising infrastructures, always with respect for the territory.

Furthermore, Galmés reaffirmed his commitment to protecting Mallorca’s natural and cultural heritage, announcing a new law that will expand the protection of the Serra de Tramuntana, while also promoting the preservation of traditions and the island’s unique identity in an ever-changing world.

“We are a people who love our land and who want to build a better tomorrow for everyone,” concluded the president of the Consell de Mallorca.
