The Consell de Mallorca has recognised seven outstanding individuals linked to hunting and the rural world.

The 2nd Hunting and Rural World Fair celebrates this Sunday, its second day of activities at the Son Pardo racetrack, featuring horse races, a demonstration of farming tools and equipment, a sling shooting workshop, a simulated bow hunt, and a sheepdog exhibition, among others.

At 12:00 p.m., there will be a live cooking show (“showcooking”), with traditional hunting recipes prepared by Michelin-starred chef Jordi Cantó. Throughout the day, children can enjoy a large sports area, pony rides, a horse-drawn carriage, and a wide variety of children’s games: face painting, colouring activities, a bouncy castle, climbing, sling shooting workshops, and more.

The Hunting and Rural World Fair celebrates its second day this Sunday with a varied program

The highlight of the Fair took place on Saturday night with a talk by the fair’s “godfather,” Javier Sagrera Azpillaga, entitled “Hunting, the oldest activity of humankind.” This was followed by the awards ceremony for the hunting and rural-themed photography contest, as well as tributes to individuals connected to the hunting and rural world. The evening concluded with performances by comedian and science communicator Xavi Canyelles and the concert of Biel Tous and Marga Pocoví.

The Second Vice President and Minister of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, presided over the tribute ceremony to seven outstanding individuals from the hunting world, accompanied by the island’s Director of Hunting, Sebastià Perelló, and the President of the Mallorca Equestrian Sports Institute (IEHM), Gaspar Oliver.

Bestard thanked the awardees for “their dedication and commitment to the hunting world, and their remarkable careers in an activity so deeply rooted in Mallorcan society.”

The honorees were:

  • Lluis Grimalt Bauzà: farmer and hunter from Petra, cooking recipe contributor on IB3.
  • Maria Batle Méndez: hunter with a long career, who began falconry at the age of 10.
  • Tomeu Carbonell Gelabert: young hunter specializing in the traditional partridge-with-decoy and “bagues” method, as well as woodcock hunting with pointing dogs.
  • Rafel Vilanova Cantallops: Spanish champion in woodcock hunting.
  • Juan Pascual Requena: president of the Mallorcan greyhound hunting society.
  • Antonia Rosselló Oliver: civil servant at the Consell de Mallorca’s Hunting Service, with more than 30 years of service in the hunting sector.
  • Javier Sagrera Azpillaga: prestigious hunter and writer in the hunting world, as well as the “godfather” of the Hunting and Rural World Fair organized by the Consell de Mallorca. He received a drawing of a partridge by painter Roberto Lanata.

Tribute to the Balearic Boc

This year’s program included a wide range of animal exhibitions: hunting and herding dogs, birds, horses, and various native livestock breeds.

The exhibition of Balearic boc specimens was one of the highlights. This edition pays tribute to the species, marking 25 years since the start of the homologation process that recognized it as a unique protected species worldwide, with the aim of safeguarding these animals and supporting their survival and conservation. Pure bocs (an ancestral goat variety) were showcased in a fenced area of the fair.

The Hunting and Rural World Fair opened yesterday and will run until 8:00 p.m. this Sunday—an event that consolidates its broad acceptance and strong public participation.
