The Second Vice President and Minister of Presidency, Coordination of Government Action and Local Cooperation, Antònia Maria Estarellas, opened the session by stressing the importance of cooperation between institutions, emergency services and journalists to ensure accurate, verified and effective information for citizens. “Our institutional channels have limitations, and that is where you, the information professionals, come in. In times of danger, people continue to rely on television, radio and the press for information,” she said.

Speakers included the Director General for Emergencies and Interior, Pablo Gárriz, who presented the main risks affecting the islands and the need to deliver clear and trustworthy messages; the Head of the Emergencies Department, Aurelio Soto, who addressed risk communication as an international discipline and its role in prevention and preparedness; and El País journalist Javier Barroso Simón, who shared his experience as a correspondent specialized in emergencies.

The conference concluded with an open debate, highlighting that information is a vital self-protection tool—allowing citizens to anticipate and prepare before a crisis, act safely during the event, and support recovery afterwards.
