Olive Sector in the Balearic Islands to Request Special Exemption for Pomace Management and Olive Oil Marketing Rules

During the eighth session of the Olive Table, held just days before the olive harvest begins, the sector agreed to request the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food to grant a Balearic exemption in two main areas:

  1. Pomace management: authorisation for its use as a fertiliser under technical conditions adapted to national regulations. The sector produces about 8 million kilos of pomace annually, which can provide nutrients to the soil while reducing fertilisation costs.
  2. Olive oil marketing rules: consideration of the islands’ specific conditions so that the planned withdrawal of oil under the crisis mechanism of Article 167 bis of the CMO regulation does not apply in the Balearics.

General Director Fernando Fernández stressed that these are highly technical but crucial issues for the sector’s sustainability. He also highlighted that initial talks with the Ministry have shown openness and willingness to consider solutions.
