The Balearic Minister for Business, Self-Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, described as “very positive” his meeting in Madrid with the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, where the upcoming 2030 electricity plan was discussed.

One of the most significant measures is the construction of a second interconnection cable between Mallorca and Menorca, a key project to ensure energy supply security and to boost the use of renewable electricity across the islands. In addition, the plan confirms the completion of the second cable linking the Spanish mainland with Mallorca, entering through Sa Ferradura in Alcúdia —a project already developed in cooperation between the regional government, the Ministry, and the local council.

The roadmap also includes the electrification of the ports of Palma, Alcúdia, Maó and Ibiza, allowing docked vessels to draw power from land instead of running their engines, thereby cutting emissions and supporting the region’s decarbonization goals. Another key measure is the expansion of infrastructure capacity for industrial activity, aimed at diversifying and reindustrialising the Balearic economy.

Following the meeting, Minister Sáenz de San Pedro emphasised that the Ministry had endorsed the Balearic Government’s requests and acknowledged the islands’ specific energy needs. For his part, Groizard described the encounter as “very fruitful” and noted that the plan provides a comprehensive response to both energy and environmental challenges in the Balearics.

The 2030 electricity plan will now be subject to public consultation and a strategic environmental assessment, both open to citizen participation.
