The Cartographic and Geographic Institute of the Balearic Islands (ICGIB) and the Consell Insular de Formentera have signed a cooperation agreement to launch the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) of Formentera, completing the implementation of this digital tool across all the islands of the archipelago.

The agreement was signed by Formentera’s president, Óscar Portas, and the Balearic Minister of Housing, Land and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, who also chairs the ICGIB.

This new platform will integrate Formentera’s cartography and geographic information into the Balearic Islands’ interoperable spatial data network. Through an open-access web viewer, citizens, professionals, and public administrations will be able to consult and combine key information on urban planning, mobility, tourism, environment, or civil protection, including the Island Territorial Plan, land registry, maritime-terrestrial public domain, green routes, hunting areas, and tourist points of interest.

Minister José Luis Mateo stressed that this represents “a strategic step towards modernisation, transparency, and efficiency in territorial management, improving public services and long-term planning.”

For his part, President Óscar Portas highlighted that the initiative “makes valuable strategic information accessible to everyone, enabling a more transparent, efficient, and modern administration.”

The agreement, valid for four years and at no extra cost for either party, establishes that the ICGIB will handle the technical setup and maintenance of the system, as well as provide training to Consell staff. Meanwhile, the Council will supply updated geographic data to ensure accessibility and interoperability.

With this initiative, Formentera reaches the same level as the other islands already operating their own SDI nodes, reinforcing its commitment to digital innovation, sustainability, and transparency in public management.
