The Mallorca Council has launched the process to expropriate Alaró Castle, with the aim of transferring ownership of the iconic monument to the public administration in the coming months. The initiative aims to transform the site into a historical and archaeological interpretation centre open to all Mallorcans.

The Councillor for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio, has signed the order initiating the administrative procedure, which includes conducting topographical surveys and preparing the necessary legal and financial documentation for the compulsory acquisition.

This action is supported by the recently approved Law 4/2025, on urgent measures to obtain land through strategic projects in the Balearic Islands, and by the fourth amendment of Mallorca’s Territorial Plan, which designates Alaró Castle as a supra-municipal general system and provides for the expropriation of heritage assets with cultural value.

Mallorca Council Begins Expropriation of Alaró Castle to Create a Public Historical and Cultural Space

The Council’s main objective is to protect the site’s heritage, historical, archaeological, natural, and landscape value, ensuring its conservation, restoration, and proper management. The castle, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), currently shows visible deterioration in parts of its iconic walls, prompting urgent action to prevent further damage.

Rubio emphasised that this step “marks a decisive moment for Alaró Castle to truly belong to all Mallorcans,” highlighting that public ownership will guarantee its preservation and universal access.

The expropriation process will involve property assessments, identification of ownership titles, and the corresponding administrative steps. Once completed, the Council plans to initiate restoration and adaptation work to convert the site into a historical, archaeological, and landscape interpretation centre, highlighting the castle’s significance in Mallorca’s history.

If the process progresses as scheduled, Alaró Castle could officially become part of the public heritage of the Mallorca Council by 2026.
