The Balearic Islands Department of Education and Universities has expanded the “Linguistic Facilitators” program, an initiative aimed at reinforcing students’ oral competence in Catalan and promoting the culture and traditions of the Balearic Islands within schools.
The Director General for Early Childhood, Diversity Care, and Educational Improvement, Neus Riera, attended the annual linguistic facilitation conference held at the Education Museum of Inca, organised by the Department of Education through the Service for Linguistic Normalisation and Educational Participation. This event marks the beginning of a new edition of the program for the 2025–2026 academic year, with the participation of 132 public education centres — including secondary schools (IES), primary schools (CEIP), and adult education centres (CEPA). This represents an increase of 26 schools compared to the 106 centres involved in the previous edition (2024–2025).

The distribution by islands is as follows: Mallorca (100 centres), Menorca (15), Ibiza (13), and Formentera (4). The program’s budget has also been expanded from €250,000 in 2024–2025 to €320,000 in 2025–2026, an increase of 28%, allowing greater coverage and participation.
Linguistic facilitators must meet specific criteria: they must hold a high school diploma, have a B2 level of Catalan, and not be active teaching staff. Each facilitator will dedicate 166 teaching hours, amounting to a total of 21,912 hours across all centres this academic year.
The program’s activities are diverse and span all educational levels, from primary education to adult learning, including radio and theatre projects, traditional games, reading and oral expression workshops, playground language activities, and sessions about local festivities and customs. Particular attention is given to newly arrived students, ensuring their integration and motivation to learn Catalan as part of their educational journey.
The main objectives of the program are to:
- Reinforce oral Catalan skills among students.
- Encourage the learning and use of Catalan, especially among newcomers.
- Promote the culture and identity of the Balearic Islands.
- Disseminate educational and sports resources adapted to each learning stage.
Through this initiative, the Department of Education and Universities reaffirms its commitment to promoting the Catalan language, fostering inclusion, and improving linguistic competence across the Balearic education system.
