The Minister of Environment Attends the Dry Stone Volunteering Day Held This Saturday in Raixa
This educational and recreational activity is part of the European Week of Dry Stone Heritage, organised by the Department of Environment of the Consell de Mallorca, and will run until October 4.
The initiative is promoted by the European Dry Stone Network (REPS), whose aim is to promote the creation of a European route of dry stone heritage as a cultural itinerary.
Minister Bestard thanked the dozen volunteers who came to Raixa for their participation in this volunteering day.
“With this type of activity, we aim to contribute to the conservation of our valuable dry stone heritage and to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving it,” said Bestard.
The Island Director of Environment, Luis Rubí, also attended the visit.
The Volunteering Day was organised jointly with the Més que pedra association. The work takes place along the path of the Raixa public estate, which is part of Variant 5 of the Dry Stone Route, and involves reconstructing the dry stone walls along a section of the path.
Visit to Participants of the Introduction to Dry Stone Walling Course
Later, the Minister visited the 15 participants of the Introduction to Dry Stone Walling Course, a training program run by the Escola de Margers, also held at the Raixa public estate.
Bestard explained that
“The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of the technique in order to bring it closer to the public and promote good practices.”
The course began on September 26 with a two-hour theoretical session and will continue with practical sessions on September 27 and October 4, 11, and 18, during which participants will learn how to build a dry stone wall.
This edition is part of the Carrefour européen du Savoir-faire des Pays de la Pierre Sèche project, co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program, with partners from Croatia, Greece, and France.
Geological Excursion Along the Dry Stone Route
The final scheduled activity will take place on Saturday, October 4, and will consist of a guided excursion around the Cúber reservoir, located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana. The tour will help participants understand how the mountain range was formed and why this area was chosen to build two water reservoirs.
The Consell de Mallorca, in collaboration with the Association of Geologists of the Balearic Islands (AGEIB), invites everyone to discover the geology of one of Mallorca’s main hiking routes.
