The Consell of Mallorca has urged Spain’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations to support a firm international commitment toward ending the Western Sahara conflict, which has now lasted fifty years.

The Minister of Finance, Innovation, and Public Service, Rafel À. Bosch, together with the Director of Strategic Projects and Institutional Relations, Maria Elena Jaume, took part in a session of the UN General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee in New York, focused on the Western Sahara issue.

During the meeting, they expressed to Spanish diplomats María del Mar Angarón and Elena Gómez their concern about the change in Spain’s foreign policy adopted three years ago, when the government began supporting Morocco’s autonomy proposal — a move that distanced itself from the “Settlement Plan” previously approved by the United Nations.

Bosch emphasized the urgency of “restoring the commitment to the Sahrawi people’s right to decide their own future through a referendum, as demanded by the international community for decades.”

They also raised concerns over the humanitarian situation faced by the Sahrawi population, both in refugee camps and occupied territories, stating that “the international community cannot continue to turn its back on a people still waiting to exercise their right to self-determination.”

This year, the Consell of Mallorca has allocated €124,000 to support initiatives in favor of the Sahrawi people, through the Mallorcan Fund for Solidarity and Cooperation.
Of that total, €80,000 has been earmarked for the Sahrawi Child Health Program, which ensures pediatric and nursing care as well as nutrition and vaccination programs for children aged 0 to 5.

An additional €25,000 was approved to strengthen a food assistance program, and €19,000 has been contributed to the “Holidays in Peace” project, which allows Sahrawi children to spend the summer with host families in Mallorca. Thanks to the island’s support, the number of participating families has doubled from 20 to 40.

The Spanish delegation also included representatives from various institutions, such as members of the Balearic Parliament and a representative from the University of the Balearic Islands, under the coordination of the International Association of Jurists for Western Sahara.
