Mallorca accounts for more than half of the total waste collected by the cleanup vessels
The Balearic coastal cleaning service, coordinated by the public company PortsIB, part of the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle, removed a total of 7,988.30 kilograms of waste from the coasts of the Balearic Islands during September 2025.
This figure represents an average of 266.28 kilograms per day and reflects the ongoing work of the 23 vessels participating in this year’s cleanup campaign — 15 beach boats and 8 coastal boats, distributed across the four islands.
By vessel type, beach boats collected 4,408.95 kilograms, while coastal boats removed 3,579.35 kilograms during the month.
By island, Mallorca registered the largest amount of waste, with 4,387.70 kilograms, followed by Formentera with 1,536.80 kilograms, Menorca with 1,120.30 kilograms, and Ibiza with 943.50 kilograms.
The beach vessels, designed to operate in shallow waters, and the coastal boats, capable of sailing up to five miles offshore, worked continuously throughout the 30 days of the month.

Coastal cleaning service removes nearly 8 tons of waste from the Balearic shoreline in September
Regarding the composition of the waste collected, plastic accounted for 35.29% of the total, followed by vegetation at 22.17% and other assorted materials at 20.67%.
In addition to routine collection, special operations were carried out to remove large or hazardous objects.
In Mallorca, teams removed traces of dispersed fuel, accumulated vegetation, a log, and an abandoned boat.
In Menorca, a dead moray eel, plastic debris, and ropes were retrieved.
In Ibiza, crews collected another drifting boat, wooden planks, and plant debris.
In Formentera, two drifting boats and a large log were removed.
During September, four incidents were reported — three of them handled in coordination with Maritime Rescue and the 112 Emergency Service, and one managed following alerts from institutions or private citizens.
The coastal cleaning campaign, which ran until September 30, has now officially concluded after five months of continuous activity.
However, as an extraordinary measure, PortsIB has kept two vessels active — one beach boat and one coastal vessel — in the Port of Vila (Ibiza) area to reinforce waste removal efforts following the torrential rains that struck the islands at the end of the month.
