Menorca has made further progress in waste management, showing clear improvements in source separation and recycling during the first nine months of 2025. The latest data indicate strong increases in recyclable fractions and a decrease in general waste.
The collection of paper and cardboard increased by 9.5% (from 4,254 to 4,658 tonnes), while light packaging rose by 16.1% (from 2,970 to 3,448 tonnes). In contrast, organic waste recorded the most significant growth, increasing by 35.3% to exceed 4,300 tonnes. Meanwhile, glass remained steady at 3,085 tonnes, and general waste fell by 4%, reaching 30,366 tonnes.

Menorca strengthens waste separation with significant growth in recyclable materials
These results reflect the effective participation of residents and businesses in Menorca’s waste collection systems, particularly the door-to-door service, now fully implemented for commercial premises and in operation at the household level in Maó and Es Castell.
Organic waste: a key factor in the island’s progress
The expansion of separate organic waste collection has been crucial to this improvement. The increase in this fraction not only reduces residual waste but also enhances the quality of recyclable materials by preventing contamination with food or liquid residues.
Collected organic waste is processed into compost at the Milà facilities, helping close the loop locally and strengthen Menorca’s circular economy model.
The Minister for Environment, Biosphere Reserve, and Cooperation, Simón Gornés, praised the community’s efforts: “These results show the strong commitment of Menorcans to sustainability and proper waste sorting.”
Gornés also stressed that, despite the progress, “there is still room for improvement to meet European recycling targets,” highlighting the ongoing cooperation with municipalities to improve services, communication, and citizen engagement.
With these results, Menorca consolidates a positive trend for the second consecutive year, confirming its role as a leader in sustainable waste management within the Balearic Islands.
