The government strengthens collaboration with the agricultural sector to maintain the land and prevent floods
The Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, held a meeting today at the headquarters of the Consell Insular de Menorca with representatives of the main agricultural associations of the island — AGRAME, FAGME and Unió de Pagesos — to coordinate joint actions between the Government and the sector for the cleaning and maintenance of ravines. Also participating in the meeting was the island’s councillor for Economy, Maria Antònia Taltavull.
During the meeting, a draft document was presented that sets out the foundations of a new line of subsidies aimed at facilitating the tasks of cleaning and conditioning sections of ravines that run through agricultural and livestock operations in the Balearic Islands. This framework seeks to optimise cooperation between the Administration and local producers to ensure a more sustainable and efficient management of water resources.

Minister Lafuente emphasised that this initiative “arises with a clear intent of collaboration with the agricultural sector, which knows better than anyone the condition of the ravines crossing their properties. We want to work together with them to keep them in proper condition and reduce flood risks.”
The subsidy line will finance actions such as the removal of sediments and waste, the elimination of invasive species, vegetation control, or the planting of native riparian species to protect the soil. Specific improvement interventions are also considered, such as the widening of channels or the installation of natural structures that enhance hydraulic capacity.
The Directorate General of Water Resources will provide technical advice and make available standardised models to process applications through the Water Portal.
This initiative is part of the conservation and preventive maintenance strategy of the hydrographic network promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands, whose purpose is to improve the territory’s resilience to climate change and strengthen cooperation between the Administration and the agricultural sector.
