The Government of the Balearic Islands has published today in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB) a new call for grants aimed at promoting the technological evolution of local terrestrial digital audio broadcasting toward DAB+ technology.

With a total budget of €300,000, this initiative is addressed to holders of DAB licenses for local radio stations in the Balearic Islands, to encourage the digitalisation and modernisation of their broadcasts. The call provides financial aid covering up to 70% of eligible investments, with a project execution deadline set for December 31, 2026.

The grants may be allocated to investments such as construction and installation works, administrative procedures required for commissioning (projects, certifications, inspections, site management, etc.), acquisition of specific DAB+ broadcasting equipment and materials (encoders, multiplexers, transmitters, antennas), and service subscriptions in the case of subcontracting.

The DAB+ technology represents a significant improvement over the original DAB system, as it allows a much higher number of programs to be transmitted within a single digital multiplex, improves sound quality, and provides greater protection against transmission errors and interference. Unlike analogue radio, where each station uses an independent frequency, the DAB system groups multiple stations within a single digital channel, optimising the use of the radio spectrum.

This call for grants will benefit numerous local broadcasting companies throughout the Balearic Islands and will help to create a more competitive, efficient, and technologically advanced sector.

Additionally, the Balearic Government is preparing a parallel project to broadcast the programming of the regional public radio station IB3 Radio in DAB+ format, which will soon make it the first regional radio station in Spain to broadcast using this modern technology.
