The Council of Mallorca has awarded, for the first time, the Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Distinction to a local shop. SONMO Valldemossa has become the first establishment to receive this recognition for its contribution to preserving the cultural and natural values that led the Serra de Tramuntana to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

The award ceremony was led by Toni Fuster, the Minister of the Presidency, who highlighted the importance of this milestone as a step forward in supporting small local businesses that promote regional products and help preserve the Tramuntana’s unique cultural landscape.

SONMO Valldemossa becomes the first shop to receive the Serra de Tramuntana Distinction

So far, the distinction has been granted to sixteen agri-food companies, seven service and non-food entities, and two emblematic sites: Jardins d’Alfàbia and Can Det. With this new recognition, SONMO Valldemossa marks the beginning of a new chapter in which small local shops are also acknowledged for their contribution.

Located in the centre of Valldemossa, the store meets the main requirement to obtain the Distinction: dedicating at least one display area to agri-food products bearing the Serra de Tramuntana label. In SONMO’s case, all its products come from the Son Moragues organic estate, which already received the Distinction in 2023. Its range includes extra virgin olive oil, green olives, jams, meat, cold cuts, natural soaps, and wool crafts.

During the ceremony, Minister Toni Fuster presented the plaque to SONMO co-founder Joe Holles and store representative María Melero. The event was also attended by Antoni Solivellas, Director of Serra de Tramuntana; Lluís Vallcaneras, Manager of the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium; and Nadal Torres, Mayor of Valldemossa.

Fuster praised the long-term restoration work carried out at Son Moragues, highlighting “more than fifteen years of dedication to recovering olive groves and forests, with the goal of restoring the estate’s original vitality.”

SONMO, the brand created by Son Moragues, is built on tradition and environmental respect, offering both products and experiences — such as guided visits and tastings — that celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of the Tramuntana.
