The Minister of Business, Self-Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, has strongly rejected the Spanish Government’s proposal to raise social security contributions for self-employed workers, describing the measure as “unacceptable” and urging the adoption of real policies that address the sector’s actual needs.

Sáenz de San Pedro met with Magdalena Comas, from ATA Balears, and Jeroni Valcaneras, from UATAE Balears, to assess the potential impact of the proposal from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. Following the meeting, he called on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to “stop putting obstacles in the way of the self-employed” and instead “promote measures that strengthen their economic activity.”

The Balearic Islands reject the proposed increase in self-employed workers’ contributions and call for real support measures

The minister pointed out that the Balearic Islands have over 100,000 self-employed workers, warning that the proposed increase would mean that an average freelancer earning around €1,600 per month would end up paying about €1,000 more per year within three years, a 28% rise.

“This is not what self-employed workers need, especially not in the Balearic Islands. What they truly require are support measures, constructive initiatives, and policies that make their work easier,” he emphasised.

As an alternative, Sáenz de San Pedro suggested implementing the EU directive that exempts self-employed workers with lower incomes from filing quarterly VAT returns.
“That is where the central government could truly help freelancers — not by imposing such disproportionate increases,” he concluded.
