The Spanish Government has announced the establishment of an annual convention on the climate emergency, to be held every year in Ponferrada (León). The initiative was confirmed by Third Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, during the closing session of the event “State Pact Convention on the Climate Emergency,” hosted at the city’s Térmica Cultural.

“The Prime Minister and I have agreed that this convention will be held every year here in Ponferrada. Each edition will allow us to assess our progress and identify new challenges. We hope that participation will continue to grow,” Aagesen announced.

Cooperation and resilience against climate change

The second day of the convention focused on governance, resilience, sustainable finance, and combating climate misinformation, reinforcing the need for collaboration among public administrations, the scientific community, civil society, and the private sector to effectively address the climate crisis.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez highlighted that León province represents a clear example of how climate change impacts territories, particularly through the wildfires experienced in recent summers.

“Spain stands on the front line of the climate emergency, and our response must be ambitious, coordinated, and sustained,” he emphasized.

Citizen engagement and institutional commitment

Throughout the event, several roundtables and public forums discussed key issues such as climate misinformation, adaptation in the agricultural sector, sustainable investment, and the role of environmental volunteers.

During a dedicated session, Aagesen reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving the working conditions and professionalisation of forest firefighters and environmental officers, regardless of their regional administration.

“This pact is also for those who protect our environment every day. We must ensure permanent, professional services with fair working conditions,” she stated.

The convention concluded with the presentation of contributions from citizens’ forums and an institutional closing message stressing that the decisions made today will determine Spain’s ability to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change in the years ahead.
