The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment has confirmed the first record of the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) in Mallorca. The first nest, found in Ses Rotgetes de Canet (Esporles), was removed in mid-October. This confirmation has triggered the invasive species control and surveillance protocol led by the Species Protection Service.

In 2025, authorities carried out an intensive programme against the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) in southwest Mallorca: over 1,000 traps were deployed in spring, leading to the capture of 20 queens and the removal of 21 nests. The campaign was backed by €28,000 from Next Generation EU funds to boost fieldwork from March to May.

For the first time, autumn trapping has been planned to capture new queens before they establish nests next spring, aiming to minimise reinfestation. These actions form part of a control and potential eradication plan, after the species was declared eradicated in 2021 but has reappeared sporadically in recent years. The programme is supported by COFIB and advised by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB).

Public cooperation is essential. Sightings of Asian hornet or Oriental hornet should be reported to the Species Protection Service (especies@dgmedinatural.caib.es) or via the official government channels.
