The Consell de Govern has authorised the extension of the cooperation agreement between the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions and the Regional Ministry of Health, ensuring continued support for the treatment and monitoring of addiction problems within Mallorca’s correctional facilities. The initiative covers the Palma Prison, the Joaquín Ruiz Giménez Social Reintegration Centre, the Mothers’ Unit and the Service for Penalties and Alternative Measures.

Professionals from the Addictive Behaviour Units (UCA) will provide therapeutic intervention to inmates with substance dependence, focusing on recovery and reducing the likelihood of relapse.

In addition to direct care, the agreement provides specialised training for prison staff involved in detainee support —including security officers, nurses and treatment teams— to improve their skills in managing drug addictions and related risk behaviours. The Health Ministry will fund this training.

The renewal reaffirms the joint commitment to improving the health and social reintegration prospects of incarcerated people, acknowledging the significant impact addiction has on their rehabilitation.

Outcomes achieved so far

✅ In the past two years, the UCA teams have attended to 209 inmates.
✅ Over the four-year duration of the previous agreement, 130 staff members received training in areas such as dual pathology, suicide prevention and early intervention.

The programme is open to inmates and individuals serving alternative sentences who request assistance and meet the inclusion criteria, regardless of their judicial status.
