The Consell de Mallorca has inaugurated the exhibition “Joan Miró and the Awakening of Contemporary Art in Mallorca. Miró and Pelaires 1969-1983” at the Museu de Mallorca, as part of the Paysage Miró project. The event drew great public attention, filling the museum’s halls with hundreds of visitors eager to explore the fourteen-year collaboration between Joan Miró and Sala Pelaires, a partnership that helped ignite the rise of contemporary art on the island.
Curated by Magdalena Aguiló Victory in collaboration with Galeria Pelaires, the exhibition highlights the strong connection that Miró forged with Mallorca and gallery owner Pep Pinya from the opening of Pelaires in 1969 until the artist died in 1983. During this period, the gallery became a cultural and avant-garde benchmark thanks to Miró’s involvement.

Hundreds gather to celebrate the artistic partnership between Miró and Sala Pelaires at the Museu de Mallorca
Among the most notable works featured is the 1973 graphic series “Mallorca”, considered one of the artist’s finest achievements, with very few complete sets existing worldwide. Visitors can also enjoy original washes, lithographs, serigraphs and drawings, along with historical documents, posters and exhibition catalogues.
This show pays tribute to Miró’s generosity, his support for local talent, and his role in projecting Mallorcan contemporary art onto the international stage. It forms part of the Year of Miró promoted by the cultural institutions of the Balearic Islands.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Museu de Mallorca from October 28, 2025, through June 15, 2026.
