The expansion doubles its capacity with four monitored beds and an investment of over €80,000.

The Minister of Health, Manuela García, today inaugurated the new Stroke Unit at Son Llàtzer University Hospital (HUSLL) — a modernised facility designed to provide faster, more humane, and more effective care for patients suffering from stroke.

With an investment exceeding €80,000, this project reflects the hospital’s commitment to continuous quality improvement and infrastructure modernisation. The expansion consolidates Son Llàtzer as the reference centre for stroke care in the Migjorn Health Sector, serving more than 550 potential patients each year.

Located on floor H4B, the new Unit expands from two to four monitored beds, thereby doubling its care capacity and enabling comprehensive, continuous care for patients with acute stroke. Each bed is equipped with multiparameter monitoring systems and updated clinical protocols that ensure early detection of any deterioration and rapid treatment response.

The project also includes a new rehabilitation room focused on early functional recovery for stroke patients, staffed by specialists in physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy with neurological expertise.

The multidisciplinary team includes professionals in neurology, rehabilitation, nursing, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and social work, supported by radiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, ICU, cardiology, and endocrinology-nutrition. Coordination is led by neurologists Moisés Fernández, Joana Pizà, and Antoni Figuerola, under the direction of Dr Ana Espino, Head of Neurology and Neurophysiology.

Since joining the Balearic Stroke Code in 2009, the hospital has treated more than 1,300 acute stroke patients, including over 300 cases in the past year alone.

Owing to improved coordination and clinical protocols, the hospital now treats patients within 91 minutes from symptom onset, starting therapy just 28 minutes after arrival. Moreover, 68% of patients regain functional independence within three months, reflecting the success of this enhanced care model.

The presence of neurologists on-site 24/7 and collaboration with the Angels Initiative have significantly improved diagnostic efficiency and increased reperfusion treatments.

With these advancements, Son Llàtzer University Hospital is moving closer to the goals of the National Stroke Strategy and the European Stroke Plan 2030, aimed at reducing mortality, improving recovery outcomes, and ensuring that 90% of patients receive specialised stroke care.
