The event, organised by the Directorate General of Innovation and Digital Transformation alongside the Bit Foundation, highlighted the growing relevance of digital twins as a strategic tool to boost efficiency and sustainability in managing territorial and tourism-related resources.

During the opening session, Vice President and Minister of Economy, Finance and Innovation, Antoni Costa, stressed that these tools are “much more than a trend; they represent a qualitative leap, enabling us to anticipate and plan in crucial areas such as mobility, energy consumption, water management, and tourism models.”

Over 100 Professionals Attend Digital Twins Conference for Smart and Sustainable Management in the Balearic Islands

General Director of Innovation, Sebastián González, presented the digital twin project for the Balearic coastline, an interoperable data space designed to improve public decision-making and services. Alejandro de Grau from NTT DATA outlined the benefits of this project in terms of security, sustainability, and tourism flow management.

Data Governance, a Strategic Priority

A key topic of the event was data governance. Bàrbara Barceló, Director of IBESTAT, stressed the importance of managing public data with shared standards to ensure quality, interoperability, and reusability. She also announced the creation of the Government Data Steering Committee, with a federated model covering administrative, statistical, cartographic, and scientific areas.

Participants emphasised the risk of becoming “buried in data” unless proper data governance is implemented. Training, data consistency, and clear regulations will be essential to achieve evidence-based policymaking.

Tourism and Digital Twins: A Strategic Focus

A dedicated session explored how digital twins can benefit sectors like tourism and hospitality. Companies such as Turistec, TUI, and Hotelverse shared how these technologies can enhance customer experiences, optimise resource use, and improve accommodation management.

The event closed with a roundtable on the “challenges and limitations of developing and maintaining digital twins in the tourism industry,” which highlighted concerns regarding fragmented initiatives, skills shortages, and the need for updated legislation to promote public-private collaboration.
