The number of effective working days in Spain has risen by 13.6% since the end of 2019, with social security hours increasing by 13.1% over the same period, according to data published by the Ministry.

This rise holds even after excluding days spent on furlough (ERTE), sick leave, and other special circumstances. Women’s participation has grown notably: from 47.4% of total worked days in 2019 to 48.2% in 2025.

High-value sectors are driving this growth, especially Education (+39.4%), Information and Communications (+33.4%), and Professional Services (+25.7%).

The impact of labour reform is also visible: by the second quarter of 2025, 88.3% of all days worked were covered by permanent contracts, compared to only 11.7% under temporary contracts, reversing the ratio seen in 2021.
