After an intense morning of heavy rainfall this Thursday, the weather is set to calm down temporarily until Friday, according to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET). However, a new storm system is expected to hit the Balearic Islands on Saturday, bringing widespread heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal disturbances.

During today’s meeting of the METEOBAL Advisory Technical Committee, AEMET confirmed that the fast-moving front that affected the islands this morning has already passed. For the remainder of today and tomorrow, only isolated and mild showers are expected, mainly overnight.

Emergency Services warn of heavy rain and severe weather expected across the Balearic Islands this Saturday

On Saturday, conditions will deteriorate again as a new rain front arrives. An orange weather alert has already been issued for the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca due to heavy rain and strong winds. Yellow alerts are in effect for the rest of Mallorca and Menorca for rain, wind, and coastal events, while Ibiza is under a yellow alert for rain only.

Emergency Services continue to closely monitor the situation and will reconvene on Friday to reassess and coordinate response efforts.

Summary of Thursday’s weather impacts

This morning’s downpour resulted in rainfall of 20 to 30 liters per square meter in as little as 30 minutes, while winds reached up to 110 km/h in Palma’s western harbor. Between 7:00 AM and 12:00 PM, the 112 emergency line logged 70 incidents, mostly in Mallorca, involving fallen trees, debris, and flooded streets. While there were no severe consequences, notable incidents included a temporary road closure in Ibiza and partial roof damage at a healthcare center in Palma due to strong winds.
