Spain’s Minister of Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, has announced the approval of an additional €13 million in funding for the regions of the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla to support the reception of unaccompanied migrant children. This allocation is in addition to the €22 million already granted earlier this year, bringing the total to €35 million invested by the government in these territories.
Rego emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring dignified and proper care for these minors, and confirmed that a further €100 million will be distributed among autonomous communities in the coming weeks, as stipulated by Royal Decree-Law 2/2025, reinforcing a binding and solidarity-based reception model.

The Youth and Childhood Minister stresses the need to strengthen the migrant child reception system
During the latest Sectoral Conference on Childhood and Adolescence, the government sought to discuss a new regulation aimed at standardising quality criteria in child reception centres. However, several regions declined to debate the proposal, despite having previously contributed during the consultation process. Rego expressed her regret and highlighted that approving this regulation falls under the central government’s authority.
The minister also reported that over 200 relocation procedures for unaccompanied migrant children have already been processed from territories under extraordinary migration pressure, in what she described as a smooth and coordinated protocol.
