The island triples its infrastructure from 7 to 21 stations with a €13 million ERDF-co-financed investment

In Sant Jordi (Ibiza), a new antenna of the public TetraIB network—based on TETRA technology—has been put into service as the first step of a phased plan aimed at bringing the island’s emergency-communications coverage to approximately 90 %, aligning it with the rest of the archipelago. The island will increase its stations from 7 to 21, effectively tripling its infrastructure. This upgrade forms part of a €13 million investment, co-financed by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), to modernise TetraIB across the Balearic Islands.
The new station immediately improves coverage in the Sant Jordi area, Ibiza airport, Platja d’en Bossa and the seafront up to the Punta d’es Jondal — zones with high residential density and significant tourist pressure during the high season.
“Today in Sant Jordi, we start a phased rollout that will triple TetraIB’s infrastructure in Ibiza: from 7 to 21 stations, to reach 90 % territorial coverage and bring the island to the level of the rest of the archipelago. It is a priority and we are already executing it,” said Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Finance and Innovation, Antoni Costa.

The plan will be implemented progressively, with critical zones for Police Local, 112 emergency services, ambulance services and firefighters being prioritised. The value of having a dedicated public emergency-communications network was clearly seen during the recent nationwide blackout: TetraIB was the only network in the Balearics that didn’t collapse, enabling emergency services to keep operating when commercial networks failed.
Sant Josep de sa Talaia’s Local Police had long called for improvements in coverage. Their wait is over: “This is great news for our officers and our neighbours: Sant Jordi, the airport and Platja d’en Bossa gain quality and continuity in their communications. It was a long-standing demand that starts to be addressed today,” said Deputy Mayor Nieves Bonet.
TetraIB is the Balearic Government’s professional network built on TETRA technology for closed-user groups (police, fire brigades, medical emergencies, civil protection…). Unlike the previous model —each public administration with its own network— the Government is committed to a shared network facilitating coordination across State, Autonomous Community and local levels. The agreement with the Balearic Federation of Local Entities (FELIB) allows local police forces and municipal services to join TetraIB as a shared service, reducing duplication, streamlining procurement and optimising technical/human resources.
“Our goal is clear: one large public shared network that boosts coordination, saves costs and simplifies management for municipalities and consells. Joining a single network means winning in security and efficiency,” summarised Miquel Cardona, Director of IB Digital.
