Menorca, Formentera and the municipalities of Sant Antoni de Portmany, Alcúdia, Palma, Calvià and Capdepera have received the Green Flag distinction, recognising their strong commitment to circular economy practices and the recycling of glass containers. Capdepera and Formentera receive this distinction for the first time, while the remaining municipalities renew their award.
In the sixth edition of the Green Flags Movement, organised by Ecovidrio, 31 municipalities and more than 2,800 hospitality businesses took part, collectively recycling over 15,800 tonnes of glass during the summer season. The awards were presented by the regional Minister for Enterprise, Self-Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, and Ecovidrio’s regional manager, Roberto Fuentes.

Ecovidrio awards the Green Flag to Menorca, Formentera and five municipalities in the Balearic Islands for their commitment to sustainability and glass recycling
Capdepera stood out for achieving a 98.6% participation rate from its Horeca sector and collecting more than 422 tonnes of glass. Formentera reached full participation from its hospitality industry and collected 495 tonnes. Ecovidrio also recognised Can Mimosa for its environmental dedication, granting it access to an exclusive master class led by Michelin-starred chef Ricard Camarena.
Sáenz de San Pedro highlighted that welcoming Capdepera and Formentera into the list, alongside the renewal of the long-standing municipalities, “confirms the success of environmental policies and the solid local commitment.” Fuentes praised the collaboration between public institutions and the hospitality sector and congratulated all participants.
Every summer, the Green Flags Movement helps address the surge in glass consumption in tourist areas, where nearly 50% of single-use glass waste is generated. Thanks to local engagement, the Balearic Islands have:
- Avoided 9,100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to removing 4,200 cars from the road for a year.
- Saved 18,900 tonnes of raw materials, nearly twice the weight of the Eiffel Tower.
- Reduced energy use by 11,200 MWh.
This year, Ecovidrio will also reward the most committed municipality in each region with a beach cleaning initiative. In the Balearic Islands, the winner was Sant Antoni de Portmany.
At the national level, 165 municipalities and more than 14,000 hospitality establishments took part, collecting over 66,800 tonnes of glass during June, July and August. Ten municipalities earned the Green Flag and another twenty-two renewed their 2024 distinction, strengthening their position as leaders in coastal sustainability.
