To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25N), the Consell de Mallorca has displayed a large banner on the façade of La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre and presented its programme of events for this year’s commemoration. With this symbolic act, accompanied by the reading of an institutional manifesto under the slogan “Raise your voice against violence towards women,” the institution reaffirms its commitment to combating gender-based violence.
The president, Llorenç Galmés, together with the Councillor for the Presidency, Toni Fuster, reminded the public that since official records began, 41 women have been murdered in Mallorca as a result of gender-based violence. He emphasised that behind each case lies a devastated family and highlighted that the most extreme expression of this violence is only one part of a wider problem that includes physical, psychological, economic, sexual and vicarious abuse. He insisted: “This is a reality we cannot accept,” calling for continued progress in prevention, early detection and comprehensive support for victims.

The Consell de Mallorca raises its voice against violence towards women on the occasion of 25 November
The manifesto, read by Ana Ferriol, Director for Families, stresses that this year’s motto is not just a slogan but a firm commitment shared by society as a whole. It recalls the approval of the new State Pact against Gender Violence, which includes 462 measures designed to strengthen the fight against all its manifestations. Nevertheless, the text urges further improvements such as increasing specialised police units, mandatory training for judges, specialised courts, expanded risk-assessment criteria and more effective services to ensure protection for victims.
Two major events form part of the programme: the round table “Women and men who care for women”, scheduled for 18 November at CaixaForum Palma with professionals dedicated to supporting victims; and the solemn ceremony at Raixa, where the victims of gender-based violence in Mallorca will be honoured through the reading of their names, a minute of silence and a floral tribute. In addition, the Consell has made available over one hundred cultural and educational activities aimed at promoting awareness and prevention across municipalities.
Regarding investment, the Consell reports a 32% increase in the budget dedicated to victim support during the current legislature, together with the launch of pioneering services in the Balearic Islands. For 2026, the Families, Equality and Diversity programme will reach €3.2 million, include major reinforcement of the No i punt! prevention points, and maintain €6.3 million for the support network such as Casa Violeta or Aurora, while consolidating newer services like Camí Violeta and Centro Libertas. Funding is also maintained for shelters, with additional resources allocated to improve facilities such as Casal Ariadna, and €345,000 in grants will support organisations assisting women in prostitution, especially in rural areas.
