Sanitary authorities have issued a call for the responsible use of antibiotics, stressing the need to avoid self-medication and to complete all treatments prescribed by healthcare professionals.
The National Antibiotic Resistance Plan warns that misuse of these medicines is contributing to the rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Officials emphasise that antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections and that improper use weakens their effectiveness and increases public health risks.

To address this challenge, antimicrobial stewardship programmes (PROA) have been implemented in hospitals and primary care centres. These multidisciplinary teams aim to optimise antibiotic prescriptions, improve clinical outcomes, reduce adverse effects and slow the emergence of resistance.
In the Balearic Islands, all health management areas have PROA teams promoting best practices among professionals and raising public awareness about responsible antibiotic use. Most of these teams will also apply for the CertificaPROA accreditation from the national medicines agency (AEMPS), recognising their efforts to minimise antimicrobial resistance and protect the population.
