Llorenç Galmés took part this Thursday in Madrid in an event marking the 45th anniversary of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, joining local leaders from across the country. During the meeting, the island’s president stressed the crucial contribution that local administrations have made to Spain’s democratic development.

Galmés pointed out that the Federation was created after the first democratic municipal elections in 1979 to unite towns and provincial institutions, and noted its long-standing role as the collective voice of local authorities. He also highlighted its influence on the design of Spain’s territorial model and on strengthening cooperation between different levels of government.

Galmés Highlights the Role of Island Governments in Safeguarding Citizens’ Well-Being

The conference addressed matters such as shared public services, rural development and demographic challenges. In this context, Galmés underlined the importance of intermediate governments —among them the island councils— as essential structures to guarantee equal access to services and opportunities regardless of where citizens live.

He explained that, while some regions face depopulation, Mallorca deals with the opposite: demographic growth, combined with the specific challenges of insularity, including mobility, housing pressure and connectivity. He also recalled that the island’s administration manages a broad set of responsibilities, from social services and culture to tourism planning, roads and territorial management, positioning it as one of the closest institutions to residents.

Finally, Galmés reminded attendees that Mallorca hosted for the first time this year the Sixth Conference of Provincial, Island and Insular Council Presidencies —a major gathering of over thirty local government leaders that placed the island at the forefront of national discussions on public administration and territorial governance.
