The Government of the Balearic Islands held the official ceremony for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25N) in the courtyard of Can Balaguer, an event dedicated to recognising the essential work of professionals and organisations that support, protect and accompany victims across the islands.
Presided over by Margalida Prohens, the event brought together institutional representatives, organisations and professionals. In her speech, the president stressed the need to continue raising our voices to break the silence and fight for the eradication of gender-based violence, noting that the rising number of femicides requires administrations to provide “effective and real protection”.
🔹 Six key services and organisations awarded
President Prohens, Social Welfare Minister Sandra Fernández, and the Director of the Balearic Institute for Women, Catalina Salom, presented awards to:
- IBDONA 24-Hour Service: manages around 4,500 calls each year and offers continuous support to victims.
- Ibiza Crisis Centre: recognised for advancing specialised responses to sexual violence on the island.
- Women’s Information and Support Point of Formentera: a model of proximity and rapid assistance in urgent cases.
- Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (FELIB): for coordinating municipal efforts on prevention and detection.
- Family Protection Unit of Palma Local Police: essential in emergency response, psychological support and urgent case processing.
- Menorca Civil Guard: for its “Sala Amable”, a dedicated safe room offering privacy and protection for women and minors at the Maó barracks.

🔹 A ceremony of remembrance and collective commitment
The event featured the reading of the official 25N manifesto and a tribute to the women murdered in the past year.
Prohens highlighted that “when citizens speak up, the protection network works”, stressing the importance of ensuring that no aggression goes unheard.
The ceremony reaffirmed a shared commitment: ending gender-based violence requires the determination of public institutions and the active involvement of society. Only through collective courage can a safe and respectful environment be guaranteed for all women.
