Black Friday arrives this 28 November, bringing a wave of online discounts that flood social media and digital platforms. The Directorate for Consumer Affairs warns that this period often sees an increase in deceptive promotions and urges shoppers to stay alert.
🔍 Common deceptive strategies
Some retailers raise prices shortly before the sale to create fake discounts, hide extra fees at checkout, use exaggerated countdown timers, or display false scarcity messages such as “only 2 left”. Misleading comparisons with prices that were never applied are also common.

🛒 Tips for safer online shopping
Before placing an order, consumers are advised to:
- Check the seller’s identity, contact information, and reputation.
- Use secure payment methods (credit cards or systems that allow refunds).
- Ensure the website uses a secure connection (https) and trusted certification badges.
- Be sceptical of offers that seem too good to be true.
- Review the original price, VAT, shipping fees, and return conditions.
- Keep copies of the transaction and invoice.
Buyers have 14 days to withdraw from online purchases without penalties.
🛡 Guarantees remain unchanged
Consumer rights do not vary during sales periods:
- New products include a three-year warranty.
- Digital goods and services have a two-year warranty.
🌱 Responsible consumption
Consumers are encouraged to consider the social and environmental impacts of their purchases, prioritise sustainable products, and support local businesses in the Balearic Islands.
