Around 600 participants of all ages joined the European Week for Waste Reduction 2025 in Mallorca, an event coordinated by the island’s administration and focused this year on the reuse, repair and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The programme featured activities across several municipalities and was designed to engage families, students and the general public.
Pedro Bestard, Second Vice President and Councillor for Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, attended a live cooking session at Palma’s Olivar market, accompanied by the island’s Waste Director, Margalida Roig. During the demonstration, chef Cati Pons prepared a complete menu using local products, an activity followed by first-year students of the intensive vocational cooking programme at CIFP Juníper Serra.

Nearly 600 people take part in Mallorca’s European Recycling Week activities
Bestard highlighted “the strong community involvement in this edition”, noting that children enjoyed storytelling sessions while older students learned practical habits related to prevention, reuse and sustainable consumption, including the environmental benefits of choosing local ingredients. He emphasised the importance of “turning waste into resources and understanding how everyday appliances can be repaired and given a longer useful life”.
The initiative, organised by the Island Waste Department in collaboration with Fundació Deixalles, offered a total of 27 activities between 22 and 30 November. These included live cooking workshops aimed at reducing food waste, hands-on repair sessions for small appliances and storytelling events in libraries and schools.
Municipal markets in Palma (Santa Catalina and Olivar), the market in Alcudia, the Deixalles centre in Inca and various libraries and primary schools across Mallorca served as venues, helping bring the values of recycling and circular economy closer to nearly 600 participants.
