The Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) has introduced a series of educational workshops on oral health and nutrition, delivered by students from ADEMA’s degree programmes in Dentistry and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
The initiative, coordinated by the Social Welfare Department of the Consell de Mallorca, is aimed at the more than 3,200 people over the age of 65 who attend any of the seven Centres for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy (CPAP) across the island.

Promoting active ageing and improving wellbeing
The programme combines hands-on training for university students with preventive and educational activities designed for older adults, with the goal of boosting autonomy and encouraging healthy habits.
During his visit to one of the workshops, the Minister of Social Welfare and president of IMAS, Guillermo Sánchez, highlighted that these sessions “provide practical and accessible tools that improve overall wellbeing and support real active ageing”, which is central to the mission of the CPAPs.

The session held at Llar Avinguda Argentina CPAP also included the participation of ADEMA’s director general, Carlos López, along with members of the teaching staff.
Practical content tailored to older adults
The workshops cover topics such as:
- the fundamentals of the Mediterranean diet,
- the role of protein, fibre and essential micronutrients,
- strategies to prevent malnutrition and muscle loss,
- how to read and understand nutrition labels,
- differences between fresh foods and ultra-processed products,
- healthy shopping simulations and product comparison,
- creation of an adapted recipe booklet with simple and balanced dishes.
The oral health component focuses on preventing common dental problems in older adults and promoting adapted hygiene practices.
A project with strong community impact
Minister Sánchez expressed his appreciation for the students’ involvement, noting that they not only share useful knowledge but also “encourage social interaction, active participation and health awareness”, all crucial to preventing isolation or functional decline.
ADEMA’s director general, Carlos López, also thanked IMAS and the CPAP teams for their trust and emphasised how the collaboration strengthens the community dimension of the project.
The event was also attended by Catalina Maria Mascaró, Island Director of Community Care and Promotion of Personal Autonomy, and several members of ADEMA’s academic team.
