The first edition of the “Local Product Vouchers – Illes Balears” initiative, designed to encourage direct purchasing from producers across the islands, has come to an end with a highly positive outcome. Over a six-week period, consumers redeemed almost all available vouchers, generating close to €800,000 in sales for farms, cooperatives, fishermen’s guilds, agri-food businesses and direct-sale outlets throughout the Balearic Islands.

Local-Product Vouchers Boost the Primary Sector With Nearly €800,000 in Direct Sales

More than 9,000 people took part in the programme, choosing proximity food and strengthening the relationship between producers and customers. Participation was particularly strong in Mallorca, where over 95% of vouchers were redeemed, and in Ibiza, where nearly all were used. Menorca also showed very high levels of engagement. Many producers exceeded 90% usage of their assigned vouchers, reflecting the significant demand for local goods.

The scheme boosted sales of a wide variety of local foods, with wine, fruit and vegetables, meat products and charcuterie standing among the most purchased. It also helped promote numerous artisanal and traditionally crafted items that form part of the islands’ culinary identity.

Producers highlighted the campaign’s success, noting that it fostered direct contact, trust and customer loyalty. The initiative also confirms the growing interest among residents in choosing locally sourced foods, a key factor for the economic and food resilience of the region.

Given these results, the organising department views this first edition as a major step forward and aims to continue developing programmes that strengthen the primary sector, expand direct-to-consumer sales, and consolidate local-product consumption as a strategic pillar for the future of the Balearic countryside and economy.
