A group of forty teachers from schools in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza is participating in the Territorial Cooperation Programme for the Enhancement of Mathematical Competence, an initiative aimed at improving mathematical understanding and performance among pupils in primary education, compulsory secondary education and basic vocational training.

This programme, launched in response to the latest PISA results, is funded by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Vocational Training and co-funded by the European Social Fund Plus. Its objectives follow European guidelines designed to reinforce key student competences.

During a visit to the participating group, Neus Riera, Director General for Early Childhood, Diversity and Educational Improvement, and Sebastià Massanet, Director General for Universities, Research and Higher Artistic Education, highlighted the programme’s innovative approach, which combines professional development, collaborative work and institutional support.

To foster mathematical competence, the initiative provides selected schools with additional resources, tailored improvement plans, reduced-size groups through co-teaching or class splitting, and training in competence-based methodologies. Each school will appoint a coordinator, and the educational administration will expand its team of advisors responsible for organising and delivering training in mathematics teaching strategies.

The programme is carried out in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), which has developed a micro-credential for the participating teachers. This qualification will have international recognition and certify their specialised training in mathematical education.

With this initiative, the regional Ministry reaffirms its commitment to offering students more opportunities, better tools and greater confidence when facing mathematical challenges, ultimately improving their academic and personal prospects.
