A pilot project led by IB Digital has made Inca Hospital the first facility in the Balearic Islands to offer stable indoor coverage of the TetraIB emergency network.

The Balearic Agency for Digitalisation, Cybersecurity and Telecommunications (IB Digital), part of the regional Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation, has deployed a TetraIB emergency-network repeater inside Inca Hospital. This makes the centre the first in the islands to benefit from reliable indoor communications for critical operations.

The new installation ensures continuous data transmission and prioritised coordination during emergencies or communication failures, contributing to faster response times.

“This initiative stabilises communication inside the hospital and helps healthcare staff anticipate decisions and prepare resources more accurately,” explained Miquel Cardona, general manager of IB Digital. “We aim to ensure that public technology becomes a practical tool for emergency services and citizens.”

Operational improvements for medical teams

In the event of network outages, power failures or incidents with multiple casualties, TetraIB coverage allows uninterrupted, high-quality communication between hospital teams and ambulances. This supports efficient team mobilisation, preparation of treatment areas and smoother patient reception.

According to José Luis Guerrero, medical director of Inca Hospital, “having stable communication with SAMU061, 112 and medical transport units is essential for coordinated care. This upgrade improves internal organisation and strengthens patient safety.”

Mission-critical technology for healthcare facilities

TetraIB is the emergency communication system of the Balearic Islands, designed for robust, secure and prioritised transmissions. The pilot installation in Inca has delivered positive results with no interference affecting medical equipment.

The improvement is part of a wider plan to enhance emergency services across all islands. After validating the pilot, the regional administration plans to expand the model to hospitals that still lack indoor coverage.

Cardona added that “the next step is to adapt this model to other healthcare centers to ensure stable communication in critical scenarios.”

This initiative consolidates the islands’ commitment to a reliable and unified public communication network supporting frontline professionals.
