The Cultural Centre La Misericòrdia officially opened the Christmas season this Saturday with a lively celebration that brought together hundreds of visitors. The event featured the switching on of the Christmas lights, the opening of the nativity scene exhibition, dioramas and traditional neules, a choir concert, and the much-loved hot chocolate gathering.

The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, highlighted the significance of this time of year, noting that Christmas «is not just a date on the calendar, but a moment to share with family and friends and to preserve Mallorca’s traditions from generation to generation». He also expressed his satisfaction in seeing the centre full of life and activity, describing it as a vibrant cultural hub that has undergone a remarkable transformation.

Galmés encouraged the public to enjoy «a truly Mallorcan Christmas», with events that showcase the island’s cultural and historical heritage in a welcoming and festive setting.

The recently renovated garden once again became the focal point of the celebration, with the lighting of several emblematic decorations such as the tree of neules—declared a cultural heritage asset—alongside a new wooden tree decorated with handcrafted elements like tela de llengües, siurells and llata.

Inside the Aljub, visitors attended the opening of the nativity scene, neules and diorama exhibition, which will remain open until January 5. The choir concert and hot chocolate served to complete a memorable evening that officially ushered in Christmas at La Misericòrdia.

Christmas Programme 2025

La Misericòrdia will host a wide range of activities until 5 January, combining tradition, music, workshops and charitable initiatives.

One of this year’s highlights is the return of the historic Belén de la Sang, considered the oldest nativity scene in Europe, which is back after ten years thanks to the first stage of its restoration. The presentation of the restored pieces will take place on 10 December.

A living nativity will be staged in the gardens on 13 December, and daily concerts will be held in the patio of les Rentadores. Creative workshops for children will take place on 20, 21, 27 and 28 December, including one dedicated to making traditional neules.

The programme also incorporates a solidary dimension with a toy collection campaign (from 6 December to 7 January) and a blood donation day on 20 December in the morning.
