Spain’s Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Service expressed the Government’s strong support for the European Commission following criticism from the United States regarding the penalty issued against the platform X for breaching EU online content rules.
During the EU Council on Transport, Telecommunications and Energy in Brussels, the minister described as “unacceptable” the remarks posted on X by U.S. Vice President James David Vance, in which he attacked the Commission’s decision. The fine, amounting to $140 million, was imposed on the company owned by Elon Musk for failing to comply with EU regulations.

The minister also backed the Commission’s proposal for a digital omnibus regulation to simplify administrative procedures, emphasising that simplification must not lead to deregulation—particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. He stressed that citizens must be able to identify when they are viewing AI-generated content, as mandated by European legislation.
In addition, he confirmed Spain’s firm intention to host one of the EU’s first artificial-intelligence gigafactories, facilities that will integrate over 100,000 advanced chips to train generative models and strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty.
