The Consell de Mallorca has unveiled the first results of the restoration work carried out on the historic Belén de la Sang, a nativity scene that has remained out of public view for over ten years. The project began last March and has already brought back to life the central figures of the ensemble, allowing it to be displayed again during Christmas 2025.

Consell president Llorenç Galmés emphasised the cultural significance of the recovery:

“After more than a decade of neglect, we were determined not to let another Christmas pass without the Belén de la Sang. This is more than an artwork — it is a cultural and spiritual symbol for generations of Mallorcans.”

The “Belén de la Sang” Nativity Scene Returns After More Than a Decade

This initial phase focused on restoring the most iconic elements: the grotto, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, the infant Jesus, and five Baroque angels. The first restored pieces will be presented to the public on Wednesday, December 10, at 7 p.m., at the Church of the Annunciation (La Sang) in Palma.

The event will also feature a sacred music concert titled Ninna Nanna: 17th-Century Spanish and Italian Advent and Christmas Music, performed by Raquel Andueza and La Galanía.

Beginning that same day, the nativity scene — considered the oldest functioning Neapolitan nativity in Europe — will be open to visitors until January 6. Once the festive season ends, the ensemble will be withdrawn from display so that the remaining restoration work can continue. The full project involves €400,000 in funding and an estimated 15-month timeline.

Technical studies conducted so far include historical documentation, 3D modelling, UV-light analysis and cleaning tests, all of which have made it possible to diagnose the condition of the figures and recover their original appearance.

The restoration is being carried out by the joint venture Tracer Conservación y Restauración S.L. and Carlos Sánchez Gómez, both highly respected in the field of cultural heritage preservation.
