The Director General of the Balearic Islands Health Service, Javier Ureña, announced before the regional Parliament that the islands are now operating what he described as “the most advanced ambulance fleet in Spain and Europe”. During his appearance before the Health Committee, he explained that a €56 million strategic contract has enabled the incorporation of 246 new vehicles, including 116 emergency units and 130 scheduled transport ambulances, representing an increase of 27 units over the previous fleet.
Ureña noted that the starting point was a deteriorated and outdated fleet, with vehicles averaging more than seven years old, frequent breakdowns, and designs no longer suited to current patient and professional needs. This made a decisive investment essential.

Balearic Islands Health Service Announces Deployment of Europe’s Most Advanced Ambulance Fleet
The new ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art technology aimed at significantly improving patient care. Key upgrades include integrated anchoring systems, a surveillance camera in the care cabin, wider seats with belt extenders, and a more powerful climate-control system featuring air purification to reduce virus and bacteria transmission risks.
For the first time, all stretchers are electric, enhancing safety and comfort for both patients and healthcare staff. Additional upgrades include more electric platforms and certified fastening systems for mobility aids such as walkers, stair-climbing chairs and wheelchairs.
Deployment of the fleet began today across the entire archipelago, with 169 vehicles assigned to Mallorca, 35 to Menorca, 38 to Ibiza, and 4 to Formentera, covering both emergency and scheduled services.
Ureña emphasised that this renovation “represents a major leap forward” for the region’s emergency and medical transport system. He also expressed his gratitude to professionals from SAMU 061 and GSAIB, calling them “the true driving force behind this achievement and the cutting-edge service that is now being delivered across the Balearic Islands.”
