The Inca City Council officially opened Antoni Pons Square this afternoon, a new public space located between Avinguda d’Alcúdia and Jocs Street. The square pays tribute to Antoni Pons Sastre (1919–1998), former mayor of Inca and a prominent figure in the city’s cultural, social and media landscape.

During the opening ceremony, Mayor Virgilio Moreno highlighted Pons’ deep commitment to Inca and his lasting contribution to public life. He emphasised not only his role as a journalist, writer and mayor, but also his generosity and strong sense of civic responsibility.

Designed as a new meeting point for residents, the square aims to serve families and neighbours in a district that continues to grow. Featuring a children’s play area, trees and seating spaces, the project represents a significant improvement to the neighbourhood and further strengthens Avinguda d’Alcúdia as one of the city’s most vibrant urban corridors.

Inca inaugurates Antoni Pons Square, honouring a key figure in the city’s cultural and civic life. A lifetime devoted to culture, communication and public service

Born in Moscari in 1919, Antoni Pons maintained a lifelong connection with Inca, where he was educated and where he developed most of his personal and professional career. Trained as a printer, he became a respected journalist, collaborating for decades with various newspapers and mentoring generations of media professionals.

He also played a key role in local radio, particularly through Ràdio Joventut d’Inca, where he promoted well-known programmes and became a reference in sports broadcasting.

Pons’ cultural influence extended to literature and the performing arts. As a poet, reciter, actor and playwright, he achieved notable success with Son Poncella (1952), a landmark work in regional theatre. He was also actively involved in promoting concerts and cultural initiatives, driven by a strong commitment to preserving and sharing Mallorca’s cultural identity.

Serving as mayor of Inca in two terms between 1981 and 1991, he led transformative projects that shaped the city’s development, from infrastructure improvements to cultural and social facilities. Today, Antoni Pons is remembered as one of the most influential and well-rounded figures in modern Inca’s history.
