Menorca has welcomed the unanimous approval of the European opinion “Towards sustainable and resilient tourism in the European Union: a balanced and adaptive management strategy”, recently adopted by the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels. The document, presented by the President of the Balearic Islands Government, Marga Prohens, elevates a new tourism management approach to European standards, focusing on social sustainability, coexistence and responsible governance.
The president of the island institution, Adolfo Vilafranca, stated that this European endorsement represents clear recognition of a shift in the tourism management paradigm, one that Menorca has been actively promoting: moving from promotion to management, prioritising quality over quantity, and placing residents’ wellbeing at the heart of public policy.
Vilafranca подчеркed that the opinion fully aligns with the Menorcan model, rooted in the island’s status as a Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this framework, tourism is viewed as a tool for shared prosperity when it is managed with respect for the territory, the environment and local cultural identity.

Menorca welcomes European endorsement of a sustainable and community-focused tourism model. From promotion to awareness
The European document also reinforces a vision already applied across Menorca: tourism is not the problem, but part of the solution when managed in a balanced, adaptive and data-driven way. The island’s approach focuses on raising visitor awareness while safeguarding natural resources, cultural heritage and residents’ quality of life.
Key elements of the approved opinion include managing tourist flows, promoting year-round tourism, protecting access to housing, preserving ecosystems and strengthening local governance — all of which are already integrated into Menorca’s tourism, territorial and environmental policies.
Through this approach, Menorca reaffirms its commitment to a responsible and resilient tourism model, consistent with the island’s core values and actively contributing to the European discussion on the future of tourism.
