The Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca hosted today, December 15, the closing event of the Reading Club dedicated to Mallorcan writer Carme Riera. The initiative was organised by the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics (IEB) in collaboration with the Can Sales Public Library in Palma.

The reading club took place between October 13 and December 15 as part of the celebrations marking the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora. Throughout the program, participants discussed three significant works by the author —Temps d’innocència, Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora and La meitat de l’ànima— all of which highlight themes of memory and identity in Riera’s literary career.

The closing event featured an open conversation between Carme Riera, the club facilitator, Irene Zurrón, and the audience, which included many participants from the reading clubs held in Palma and other towns across Mallorca.

Key topics addressed during the discussion included the passage of time, literature as a way of understanding life, and the sea, a recurring and symbolic element in Riera’s work.

Attendees were also able to visit the exhibition “Carme Riera, l’amor, la mar”, curated by Lucía Garau and Bàrbara Galmés and designed by Antoni Garau. The exhibition will remain open to the public until January 23, 2026. It offers an insight into the author’s biography and the cultural context surrounding the creation of Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora, including literary influences, personal references, music, cinema, theatre and contemporary publications.

During the event, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzá, highlighted that the closing ceremony “is a further demonstration of this Government’s commitment to bringing local culture closer to the public, particularly through the recognition of figures such as Carme Riera”.

Meanwhile, the director of the IEB, Llorenç Perelló, stated that the event also symbolically marked the end of the Year of Carme Riera 2025 and reaffirmed the importance of Balearic culture within today’s society.
