ABAQUA to supply up to 11 million cubic metres of water per year through the main distribution network
The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Calvià City Council to ensure a reliable drinking water supply for the municipality through the main water distribution network and to reduce reliance on groundwater extraction.
The agreement was signed by the Regional Minister for the Sea and the Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, and the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual. The signing ceremony was also attended by the Director General for Water Resources, Joan Calafat, and the Managing Director of ABAQUA, Emeterio Moles.

An agreement was signed with Calvià to secure the water supply and reduce pressure on the aquifers
The agreement establishes a stable framework for cooperation aimed at strengthening supply security in the coming years, meeting peak demand during the tourist season, and reducing pressure on local aquifers through coordinated planning of local water resources and high-level network supplies.
Under the terms of the agreement, ABAQUA may supply up to 11,000,000 cubic metres of water annually to Calvià. This volume will help meet municipal demand while contributing to the protection of surrounding groundwater bodies.
The agreement also provides for the creation of a joint monitoring committee made up of representatives from both administrations. This body will oversee supply management, approve operational plans, monitor demand trends and ensure compliance with the agreement and alignment with the Hydrological Plan.
Water pricing is set at €1.06 per cubic metre (excluding taxes) and follows a two-part tariff structure, consisting of a fixed component linked to the committed annual volume and a variable component based on actual consumption. The tariff will be reviewed annually to reflect changes in energy and labour costs, ensuring the economic sustainability of the service.
This cooperation will help optimise available water resources and enhance Calvià’s resilience to droughts and seasonal increases in demand, ensuring uninterrupted water supply.
The agreement will initially remain in force for four years, with the possibility of annual extensions for up to an additional four years, subject to mutual agreement.
